Hood Canal Gateway
Welcome to Hoodsport, a small Hood Canal community in Mason County that serves as the gateway to Lake Cushman and Olympic National Park's Staircase entrance.
Hoodsport is a small census-designated place in Mason County, Washington, set along the western shore of Hood Canal where U.S. Route 101 meets State Route 119. The community traces its origins to the late nineteenth century, when a ship captain and early settlers took up farming and logging along the canal, and it was officially platted in 1890 by the Mason County Mine and Development Company, which worked manganese mines in the hills near Lake Cushman. Today the community's year-round population is small, around 400, but it swells in the warmer months with boaters, divers, hikers, and shellfishers. Hoodsport's identity is tied to the water and the mountains. Hood Canal, the long, fjord-like arm of Puget Sound that separates the Kitsap Peninsula from the Olympic Peninsula, provides cold, clear water known for scuba diving, kayaking, boating, and shellfish harvesting. Five miles inland, State Route 119 climbs to Lake Cushman, a roughly ten-mile reservoir ringed by the Olympic National Forest and Olympic National Park, and the route continues toward the Staircase entrance of the park, one of its quieter gateways. The community functions as the commercial and service hub for the surrounding Hood Canal and Lake Cushman area, with a small collection of shops, lodging, and services along the highway. Its setting between the canal and the national forest makes it a base for outdoor recreation rather than a conventional suburb. Schools are part of the Hood Canal School District, and secondary students continue to Shelton, the Mason County seat, to the south. Hoodsport suits people drawn to waterfront living, quiet rural surroundings, and direct access to the Olympic Peninsula's forests and mountains. It remains a compact, gateway-style community where daily life is shaped by the tides of the canal and the trails of the national forest.
