South King County Suburb
Welcome to Covington, a family-oriented King County city about 20 miles southeast of Seattle, built around newer subdivisions, neighborhood parks, and Lake Meridian.
Covington is a residential city in King County, Washington, located about 20 miles southeast of Seattle between the Kent Valley and the Cascade foothill town of Maple Valley. Incorporated as a city on August 31, 1997, following a resident vote the year before, Covington is one of the region's newer municipalities, built primarily around single-family subdivisions, neighborhood parks, and schools. Its roughly 20,800 residents make it a mid-sized suburban community within the broader Seattle metropolitan area. The area's history predates the city by well over a century. Originally known as Jenkins Prairie after early settler families, the community grew up as a stop on a railroad line connecting Kanasket to Auburn, serving the farms and timberlands of the plateau between the Green and Cedar river valleys. For much of the twentieth century it remained a lightly settled, semi-rural crossroads before the suburban growth of the late twentieth century transformed it into a full residential community. Covington's identity today is that of a family-oriented suburb. The city is served entirely by the Kent School District, one of the largest in Washington, and local schools such as Covington Elementary anchor neighborhood life. Lake Meridian, on the city's western edge, provides a waterfront park that is a focal point for recreation, while the surrounding plateau offers a mix of developed neighborhoods and remaining open space. Transportation is defined by State Route 18 and the Kent-Kangley Road corridor, which connect Covington to Kent, Auburn, Maple Valley, and the broader Eastside and South King County. For households, Covington offers newer suburban housing, strong schools, and a practical location for commuters to the Kent Valley industrial area, the Eastside, and Seattle.
